HOW TO USE ZIP FILES

zip

It is useful to compress files for transmission across the Internet. A smaller file size means a shorter download time. There are a number of compression utilities for different operating systems. A Windows version called Winzip can be obtained from http://www.winzip.com/. The software is interoperable with other utilities such as tar, gzip, and lhc. A DOS version of zip called PKZIP is available from ftp://ftp.pkware.com/pub/pkware/pkz204g.exe. Version 2.04g is the version in most common use today.

Following is instructions for opening up ZIP files on Windows 95, 98 or NT.

  • Download the compressed file.
  • Go to the location where you have saved the agenda and open it. A window will appear that will show you the contents of the .zip file (i.e. agenda and attachments). Along the top of this window will be the WINZIP toolbar. Choose the "Extract" button on this toolbar.
  • Once you have chosen the "Extract" button, another window will open, prompting you to save the agenda and attachments in a particular location. Choose the same folder that you created for the June meeting (making sure the "All Files" option is checked), and click on the "Extract" button again.
  • Your files (agenda w/attachments) will be extracted and you may begin to work with the decompressed files.
