File/Format - About PDF: PDF

  • PDF eliminates two problems in internet distribution of documents:
    • Portability: PDF Files are generally smaller in size than electronic sources
    • Compatibility: With the free Acrobat Reader, any user can download, print, and read PDF
  • Any document which can be printed can also be converted into PDF.
  • PDF cannot be easily edited, but the format and fonts of original document are preserved

Tools

  • There are two ways to create a PDF file
    • Acrobat PDFWriter, a special print driver supplied with the Acrobat Exchange package
    • Print a Postscript file which can then be converted by Acrobat Distiller
  • Acrobat Capture can convert scanned documents to PDF
  • Acrobat Exchange allows the author to modify a PDF file slightly

File Information

  • Document summaries, titles, authors, and keywords should be provided
  • PDF files can have a file-by-file security. An author can create a password for a PDF file that will prevent unauthorized opening, printing, or modification of the file.

Reading a PDF File

  • A user can browse, search, and print PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange.
  • The Reader works like the browser allowing the Reader to navigate PDF files
  • Acrobat Exchange extends the Reader's capabilities allowing the user to add annotations and to perform indexed full-text search across a collection of PDF documents.
  • BYTESTREAMING: PDF 4.0 files may be accessed a page at a time
