File/Format - About PDF:

PDF eliminates two problems in internet distribution of documents:

Portability:
PDF Files are generally smaller in size than electronic sources
-
Compatibility: With the free Acrobat Reader, any user can
download, print, and read PDF

Any document which can be printed can also be converted into PDF.

PDF cannot be easily edited, but the format and fonts of original document are
preserved
Tools

There are two ways to create a PDF file

Acrobat PDFWriter, a special print driver supplied with the
Acrobat Exchange
package

Print a Postscript file which can then be converted by Acrobat Distiller
-
Acrobat Capture
can convert scanned documents to PDF

Acrobat Exchange allows the author to modify a PDF file
slightly
File Information

Document summaries, titles, authors, and keywords should be provided
-
PDF files can have a file-by-file security. An author can create a password for
a PDF file that will prevent unauthorized opening, printing, or modification of
the file.
Reading a PDF File
-
A user can browse, search, and print PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat Reader
or Acrobat Exchange.

The Reader works like the browser allowing the Reader to navigate PDF files
-
Acrobat Exchange extends the Reader's capabilities allowing the user to add
annotations and to perform indexed full-text search across a collection of PDF
documents.

BYTESTREAMING: PDF 4.0 files may be accessed a page at a time
